How to Pass the G1 Test First Try
Passing the Ontario G1 on your first attempt is very doable with the right preparation. Here’s a simple, effective approach.
Six tips that work
- Read the MTO Driver's Handbook
The G1 test is based on it. Skim first, then focus on road signs, right of way, school buses, and railway crossings.
- Know both sections
You must pass 16/20 in Road Signs and 16/20 in Rules of the Road. Fail one section and you retake only that section.
- Practice with mock tests
Do full 40-question runs under timed conditions. Our mock tests mirror the real structure: two sections, no going back.
- Drill weak areas
School bus rules, No Stopping vs No Standing vs No Parking, and right-of-way are commonly missed. Practice those categories.
- Learn memory tips, not just answers
Use mnemonics (e.g. 'Red circle + slash = don't do it') so you can answer even if the wording changes.
- Arrive rested and on time
Book in advance, get enough sleep, and arrive at the DriveTest centre with time to spare. No need to rush once you're in.
Common mistakes to avoid
These topics trip up many first-time test-takers. Drill them before the real test.
- •Confusing No Stopping, No Standing, and No Parking
- •Not knowing school bus stop rules (flashing red = stop)
- •Mixing up yield vs stop — yield means give way, not necessarily full stop
- •Forgetting railway crossing rules and crossbuck meaning
- •Guessing on shapes (octagon = stop, pentagon = school, diamond = warning)
Frequently asked
- What score do I need to pass the G1?
- You need 16 out of 20 correct in each of the two sections (Road Signs and Rules of the Road) — 80% in each section.
- Can I retake only one section if I fail?
- Yes. If you pass one section but fail the other, you only retake the section you failed on your next visit.
- How long does the G1 test take?
- About 20–30 minutes. Take your time — rushing leads to avoidable mistakes.
