Ontario G1 Rules of the Road Guide

The G1’s second section covers rules of the road. Here are the key topics and rules you need to know.

Right of way

  • At uncontrolled intersections, yield to traffic already in the intersection and to vehicles on your right.
  • At a four-way stop, the first vehicle to stop goes first. If two arrive together, yield to the one on the right.
  • Pedestrians in crosswalks have the right of way. Yield when turning.

School buses

  • When a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm out, all traffic (both directions on undivided roads) must stop.
  • You must stop at least 20 metres behind the bus. Do not proceed until the lights stop flashing.
  • Failure to stop can result in fines and demerit points — this is heavily tested.

Speed limits

  • Default urban limit: 50 km/h (unless posted).
  • Default rural highways: 80 km/h (unless posted).
  • School zones: reduced limits when children are present — watch for signs.

Parking rules

  • No parking within 3 metres of a fire hydrant.
  • No parking within 9 metres of an intersection or crosswalk.
  • No parking on a sidewalk or blocking a driveway.

Sharing the road

  • Give cyclists at least 1 metre when passing.
  • Yield to pedestrians at crosswalks and when turning.
  • Be extra cautious around large trucks — blind spots are large.

Frequently asked

The first vehicle to come to a complete stop goes first. If two vehicles stop at the same time, yield to the vehicle on your right.
What is the default speed limit in Ontario cities?
